Silo in Farmstead World — building in the game, and what it is on a real farm.
A silo is a tall, sealed tower that holds grain, silage or feed and keeps it dry and out of reach of rodents and insects.
Farm silos are filled from the top and emptied from the bottom, and the tall round shape lets gravity do the unloading work.
Farm facts about silo
'Silo' comes from the Ancient Greek siros, a pit for holding grain — the first silos were holes in the ground, not towers. (en.wikipedia.org)
The earliest known silos, about 7,000 years old, were dug at Tel Tsaf in the southern Levant in the 5th millennium BC. (en.wikipedia.org)
In Malta, farmers once cut hundreds of grain silos out of solid rock; a single pit held 60 to 80 tons of wheat and kept it in good condition for four years or more. (en.wikipedia.org)
The first modern upright silo was a wooden tower built in 1873 by Fred Hatch in Spring Grove, Illinois. (en.wikipedia.org)
Silos store silage: green crops chopped fine and sealed in airtight, where they ferment into tangy preserved feed that carries livestock through winter. (en.wikipedia.org)
A grain bin is much shorter than a silo and holds dry grain instead of moist, fermenting silage; round bins empty best, with no corners for grain to wedge in. (en.wikipedia.org)
