A barn is the multipurpose building at the centre of a farm: livestock on the ground floor, hay and equipment above, and doors at both ends so air can move through.
So many barns are painted red because iron oxide made a cheap and effective wood preservative, and it was easy to mix; the red barn became the countryside default.
